History
Arturo Fuente Sr. began rolling cigars in West Tampa, Florida, in 1912. After a factory fire in the 1920s, production paused for decades. Carlos Fuente Sr. revived the family business in the 1960s and moved operations first to Nicaragua, then to the Dominican Republic in the early 1980s after political unrest in Nicaragua. The Tabacalera A. Fuente factory in Santiago became one of the most respected in the industry.
The OpusX line, introduced in 1995, was the first Dominican Puro to use Dominican-grown wrapper leaf, a technical achievement Cuban farmers had said was impossible. OpusX continues to be allocated tightly and remains one of the most-collected cigars in the world.
